Archpriest Andrei Tkachev: Love and knowledge

15.09.2023

We should probably start with how love is related to knowledge.

At first glance, these are completely different areas. In love, the heart works, in the knowledge of the head. However, this is a banal mistake. The heart works here and there. By the way, the head too. You will probably agree that people know what they love. For example, in science, crafts or the arts. You learn intensively in a subject area to forget what you have learned right after the exam. The field they love knows their hearts and wants to know more. They live with it. You dive into it. For those who love, what they love is profound. For someone who does not love it, it is either rational or superficial. But in both cases, this is boring for him. This is perhaps the secret of the difference between master and craftsman. We have not said yet anything about the love of man and God, but we can already say that if you do not love anything (if you do not learn to love), you are doomed to not recognize anything. They are doomed to ignorance. As far as man and God are concerned, love reveals its unrepeatability. For everyone around you, the person you love is ordinary, he stands out with nothing. He is unique to you. Metropolitan Antonije (Blum) used as a picture a painted stained-glass window to explain this fact. It's just a dark window without sunlight. However, as soon as the sun falls on the glass, the stained glass comes alive and begins to play in elaborate colors. The face of a loved one also becomes alive for the one who loves him. For a man who is deaf to the sounds of heaven, true music is unbearable. Bach and Mozart are for such a "deaf" cacophony. Such "deaf people" call music an unbearable noise based on greed, idleness and stupidity. They turn to these sounds as if they were affected by a disease. And for a sensitive person, true music is a non-verbal proof of the existence of another world. You remember that Vonnegut said that music is the best proof for him that there is God? So, the Lord for cold hearts is just an abstract theory or a strange invention. An intentional or accidental. But for the believer, He is everything and more than anything. Thus, the connection between knowledge and love, despite massive prejudice, is natural and unshakeable. (Source: https://orthochristian.com/)
